Went to go into the forge , secretly planning bad things in his mind
And he put on the anvil-block , the great anvil , he was striking unbreakable chains ,
Not to be loosed , so that they would stay , without stirring , there .
Nevertheless , when he , having been provoked , built the cunning trick for Ares ,
He went to go into the sea , where the lovely bed to him lay .
Around the bedposts , he spread the bonds in a circle , in all directions :
And , from the rafters above , many things hung suspended ,
Just as a spider’s web with fine threads , [ so that ] at least nobody would see them in any way ,
Not even [ someone ] of the blessed gods : for he had built around the things craftily made .
But when he was spreading the cunning trick around the whole bed ,
He went to go into Lemnos , the well-built city ,
Which is dearest to him , by a lot , of all of the lands .
Ares , with reins of gold , was not keeping a careless watch ,
When he saw Hephaestus , famed for his art , going aloof :
He went to go towards the house of famed Hephaestos ,
yearning for the sexual love of beautifully crowned Cythereia .
But she , recently , having come from [ her ] father , mighty Kronos ,
Was sitting down : but he was going into the house ,
he fixed [ his ] hold into her hand , and he was speaking a word and was calling [ her ] out by name :
‘Come to bed , love , let us be delighted , having sex :
Yet , Hephaestus is not here , but he is now gone somewhere ,
Into Lemnos , and among the rough-speaking Skintians .
Thus he spoke , and to her it seemed welcome to lie [ together ] .
The two , having gone to bed , they fell asleep : and the cunningly-wrought chains ,
Of ingenious Hephaestos , shed themselves around ,
in no way were they [ able ] to move nor to raise [ their ] limbs .
And then they perceived that [ the chains ] came to be no longer escapable .
The man , famous for [ his ] crooked feet , came near to them ,
and after having turned back again , before he arrived at the Lemnian land :
For Helios was keeping watch for him and he spoke [ to him ] of the matter :
[ Hephaestos ] went to go towards [ his ] beloved house , [ with his ] heart having been troubled ,
He stood in the doorway , and fierce anger was seizing him :
He shouted loudly , and made himself heard to all the gods :
‘Father Zeus , and other gods , always being blessed ,
Come here , so that you may see [ this ] laughable , intolerable affair ,
How Aphrodite , being the daughter of Zeus ,
Always un-esteemed me , being lame ,
But she loves destructive Ares ,
Because he [ is ] shapely and sound of foot , however I myself
Was born feeble . But , none other [ is ] blameworthy to me ,
But [ my ] two parents , thus [ would that ] they had not begotten me ! .
But you will see where these two [ are ] sleeping in sexual love ,
Going into my bed , and I lamented , having sight of [ it ] .
Not yet did I indeed expect them to lie down in this way for a short time ,
[ those ] two loving [ each other ] so very much : quickly , both will not be willing
To sleep : but the cunning trick and the chain will confine them both ,
Into [ which ] if the father has not really restored all the wedding-gifts to me ,
Such great [ gifts which ] I handed over on account of a shameless girl
In that his daughter [ is ] fair , but not under self-control . ’
Thus he spoke , and the gods gathered in his house , towards the bronze floor ,
Earth-embracing Poseidon came , Hermes the helper came ,
And lord Apollo , the far-shooter .
The more female goddesses were remaining at each [ of their ] homes , with a sense of propriety ,
And the Gods were standing in the doorway , the bestowers of good fortune :
The inextinguishable laughter of the blessed gods broke out ,
[ the gods ] seeing the contrivance of ingenious Hephaestos .
Thus , someone said , having looked at someone nearby :
‘Wrongful deeds do not thrive ; [ what is ] slow to you overtakes the swift ;
And thus now Hephaestus , being slow , has overtaken Ares ,
Being the swiftest of the gods , those who hold Olympus .
Being lame [ he succeeded ] with contrivances : and [ Ares ] owes the adulterer’s fine .
